Mack Lobell cut through a strong headwind...
Mack Lobell cut through a strong headwind in the stretch en route to a record 1:52 1/5 mile for trotters in the $110,000 Review Stakes at the Illinois State Fairgrounds at Springfield.
The 3-year-old horse, winner of the Hambletonian and the Yonkers Trot, made a detour from his pursuit of harness racing’s Triple Crown to take a shot at the 1:53 2/-5 standard set by Prakas at Du Quoin, Ill., in 1985.
Running on a track rated among the fastest in the world, Mack Lobell shaved more than a second off that mark, closing strongly despite a 16-m.p.h. headwind.
Mack Lobell’s record performance came in the first heat of the Review, and he was promptly scratched from the second heat. Spotlite Lobell, second behind Mack Lobell in the first trip, won the second heat in 1:55 and was declared the race winner.
