Wide receiver Mike Sherrard of the Dallas Cowboys is out of a Thousand Oaks hospital and says he is in good spirits, despite a season-ending broken leg that put him on his back for three weeks.

Sherrard, a former star at UCLA, was admitted to Los Robles Medical Center Aug. 5 after suffering the injury during a scrimmage against the San Diego Chargers. He was released Sunday.

“This was a tragic thing to happen to me because I was looking forward to the season, and, you know, your second year in the pros,” Sherrard said. “But I’ve been in good spirits the whole time. There’s no need in crying over this.”

Sherrard, 24, led the Cowboys last season with five touchdown catches and was expected to be a dominant figure in the Dallas attack this season. His 41 receptions were the most by a Cowboy rookie since Bob Hayes had 46 in 1965.

He was UCLA’s all-time leading receiver with 124 catches during his career.

Sherrard will have a full-length cast on his left leg for six weeks and another below the knee for six more weeks.
