The 23-bed Michael Jackson Burn Center at Brotman Medical Center in Culver City will be permanently closed this afternoon “because of escalating costs,” hospital spokeswoman Diane Sherman said. County officials said this will leave only three treatment centers devoted to burns in Los Angeles County. “We are faced with the same problems that the trauma centers, which have been closing throughout the county, were faced with: cuts in government reimbursements coupled with cost increases,” Sherman said. She said the singer had been informed of the closure. The burn center was opened under Jackson’s name in December, 1984, after he was treated at the hospital for burns suffered in an accident during the filming of a television commercial.
