The National Football League Players Assn. is expected to announce a strike deadline today after its 28 player representatives meet in Washington.

Jack Donlan, executive director of the NFL Management Council, said he expects the union to set a deadline of Sept. 30.

The current five-year contract expires today. There have been no negotiations between the two sides since Aug. 14.

Donlan said the union has refused to negotiate since that time.

“What disturbs me is the union seems to have different priorities than we do,” he said. “It disturbs me they don’t think they belong at the bargaining table.”

Dick Berthelsen, the union’s general counsel, said there haven’t been any meetings recently because union officials have been busy briefing players.

A Sept. 30 strike would come after the third week of the season. By that time, players would be eligible for a full year of pension benefits.
