OAKLAND — A 17-year-old girl was sentenced to 25 years to life in state prison on Monday for the murder of a Japanese exchange student.
Gina Florio was given the maximum sentence in Alameda County Superior Court during a one-hour hearing by Judge Martin Pulich, who cited the “viciousness and callousness” of the crime.
Florio was convicted of first-degree murder in the slaying of Junko Owaki, 18. Owaki was stabbed more than 100 times and robbed of $2,200 on Feb. 18, 1986.
Pulich decided to send Florio to the California Youth Authority until she reaches the age of 25, when she will be transferred to state prison for the rest of her term. She will be eligible for parole in about 12 1/2 years.
Florio’s co-defendant, Corey Glassman, 17, who was also convicted of murder, is to be sentenced in the same court on Wednesday.
