Purdue King Gets Through a Rough Race to Win $65,500 Balboa Stakes at Del Mar
Purdue King was bumped in the initial strides and, while battling for command in the final sixteenth, brushed with Accomplish Ridge, but hung on to win by a nose Wednesday in the $65,500 Grade III Balboa Stakes at Del Mar.
Ridden by Chris McCarron, Purdue King prevailed over Accomplish Ridge, with Eddie Delahoussaye aboard. Accomplish Ridge was three-quarters of a length in front of Mixed Pleasure, ridden by Alex Solis, in a field of eight.
Purdue King covered seven furlongs in 1:23 1/5 and earned $38,500 for the victory in the race for 2-year-olds.
Purdue King paid $4.40, $3 and $2.40; Accomplish Ridge returned $3.40 and $2.60, while Mixed Pleasure paid $3.20 to show.
