Captain Vigors Wins With Toro on the Turf in Del Mar Feature
Captain Vigors, with Fernando Toro aboard, won the $56,150 Escondido Handicap by 1 lengths over Conquering Hero Saturday at Del Mar.
Fabulous Sound set the pace, but Captain Vigors stayed close before moving to the front on the turn into the stretch. Conquering Hero rallied from sixth in the field of eight to take second, while favorite Rich Earth was third.
The winner raced the 1 1/16 miles on the infield turf course in 1:42 1/5, just 1/5 of a second off the stakes record set by Advocatum in 1981.
The winner was sent off as third choice of the crowd of 24,210 and returned $7.60, $4.20 and $3.20. Conquering Hero paid $6.20 and $3.80, and Rich Earth returned $2.80 to show.
