Sprinters Ben Johnson and Carl Lewis won separate 100-meter races Tuesday at an international track and field meet in which the 100 was run in two heats. No final was held.

Johnson, who set a world record of 9.83 seconds in the event last week at the recent World Track and Field Championships in Rome, used his fast start to win his heat easily.

The Canadian was timed in 10.35 seconds after slowing considerably near the finish. Harvey Glance of the United States was second in 10.41 followed by Mark Witherspoon in 10.44.

Lewis, who ran second to Johnson in the World Championships, was timed in 10.05. He finished a meter ahead of Jamaica’s Ray Stewart, the Rome bronze medalist. Henry Thomas of the United States was third in 10.44.

There were only heats in the 100 meters and Johnson and Lewis will not face each other here.

The Rieti meet, scheduled only 48 hours after the World Championships concluded, featured 13 stars from the Rome event. Many were using this meet as a final tuneup for the Mobil-IAAF final Friday at Brussels, Belgium.

Two of the Rome gold medalists from Bulgaria, Stefka Kostadinova (women’s high jump) and Khristo Markov (triple jump), won their specialties. Kostadinova, who missed in two attempts to break the women’s world record of 6 feet 10 inches, won with an effort of 6-9. Markov’s winning mark in the triple jump was 57-6 1/2.

Renaldo Nehemiah of the United States, who underwent tendon surgery this year, had troubles in the 110-meter hurdles. Canada’s Mark McKoy won in 13.59 followed by Igor Kazanov of the Soviet Union in 13.79.

Nehemiah almost fell three hurdles from the finish line. He lost ground and was fourth in 14.08.
