A 200-yard stretch of beach along Mission Bay was closed as a precautionary measure Wednesday after a sewage spill Tuesday sent 9,000 gallons of waste flowing toward the bay.
The beach at Campland on the Bay and the Rose Creek channel were declared off-limits about 4 p.m., after city officials raised questions about whether the sewage had reached Mission Bay, said Pat Hoy, hazardous materials management specialist for the county Department of Health Services.
The spill began Tuesday at 3 p.m., overflowing a manhole on Mercury Court in Kearny Mesa, Hoy said. A city crew sent to quell the spill turned off nearby Pump Station 61, but because of mechanical problems could not re-start the machinery, Hoy said.
An estimated 9,000 gallons of sewage flowed into San Clemente creek before the problem was solved about 10 p.m., he said.
Mission Bay water will be tested for contamination today, Hoy said.
