Decision Delayed on Tennis Lights in Sherman Oaks

Share

The fate of “invisible” tennis-court lights above a Sherman Oaks neighborhood remained up in the air Thursday as Los Angeles city planners postponed the case to give a developer time to work out a compromise with homeowners.

Neighboring residents have protested the lights as an intrusion on the nighttime ambiance of the Mulholland Drive area. But the developer has contended that the carefully shielded lights are not visible to outsiders and should be allowed to be used for nighttime tennis matches.

Sheldon Sloan, a representative of the developer, requested a two-week delay. He said developer Sheldon Appel will discuss lowered tennis courts, painting his luxury homes earthen tones and changing landscaping lighting in hopes of winning permission to use the tennis lights.

Representatives of several homeowners groups agreed to postpone the case until Oct. 1.

The issue of “invisible” lights has been viewed as potentially precedent-setting by tennis buffs and the Southern California lighting industry.
