A 20-year-old Canoga Park motorist died and his passenger was injured critically after their car struck a raised center divider and two light poles early Thursday in Reseda, police said.

The name of the dead man was not disclosed pending notification of relatives, Los Angeles Police Sgt. Bill Selesky said.

The passenger, Simon Rodriguez Santamaria, 21, of Canoga Park, was comatose and in critical condition at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

A second, unidentified passenger reportedly walked away from the accident before police arrived, Selesky said.

The car was eastbound on Sherman Way when it spun out of control and crashed at Caldus Avenue, he said. After hitting the first light pole, the car skidded more than 100 feet before striking the second pole and coming to rest, he said.

Cause of the accident is under investigation, Selesky said.
