Southland Roundup : Santos Passes for 4 Touchdowns in Aztec Rout

Todd Santos threw for a career-high 462 yards and 4 touchdowns, and the Aztecs rolled up 659 total yards as San Diego State routed Utah, 52-34, in a Western Athletic Conference game Saturday night at San Diego.

The Aztecs scored on their first four possessions, including two passes by Santos and touchdown runs of 13 and 18 yards by Paul Hewitt. At halftime, Santos had completed 22 of 27 passes for 344 yards, and San Diego State led, 45-21.

Santos threw his last touchdown pass in the third quarter to make it 52-21. Utah scored two touchdowns in the third quarter to end the scoring.

Santos finished with 35 completions in 42 attempts with one interception. The 462 yards gave him 8,141 for his career, as he moved up five places to 12th on the all-time list. He must average 249 yards in his final 10 games to break the all-time record of 10,623 yards, set last year by Kevin Sweeney of Fresno State.

San Diego State is 1-1 overall, 1-0 in the conference. Utah is 1-1 overall and in the conference.

Cal Lutheran 23, San Francisco State 13--Quarterback Tom Bonds, healthy again after playing much of last year with an injured knee, threw two touchdown passes to lead the Kingsmen over the Gators in a nonconference game at San Francisco.

Bonds gave Cal Lutheran a 7-0 lead midway through the first quarter when he scrambled away from the Gator pass rush and lobbed a 39-yard touchdown pass to John Bankhead.

San Francisco State fumbled on its next drive, and Cal Lutheran recovered and drove 46 yards for the touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

In the third quarter, Bonds threw a nine-yard touchdown pass to Bankhead to give Cal Lutheran a 23-7 lead. Bonds completed 20 of 30 passes for 231 yards with 1 interception, while Bankhead had 7 receptions for 115 yards.

UC Santa Barbara 34, Azusa Pacific 7--Paul Wright threw three touchdown passes, and the Cougars had minus-51 yards rushing to lead the Gauchos’ rout at Santa Barbara.

Wright’s touchdown passes, of eight and seven yards, came in the first half as Santa Barbara took a 20-0 halftime lead. In the third quarter, he put the game away with a 51-yard touchdown pass. Wright completed 15 of 27 passes for 166 yards.

The Santa Barbara defense sacked Azusa Pacific quarterback Richard Jimenez eight times.

Occidental 13, U. San Diego 13--Mark Collingsworth kicked a 34-yard field goal as time ran out to give the Tigers a tie with the Toreros in a nonconference game at Occidental.

U. San Diego took a 13-10 lead with 1:20 remaining when running back Todd Jackson caught a 20-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brendan Murphy. Jackson also rushed for 102 yards in 22 carries.

But Occidental quarterback Mark Krajnik drove the Tigers 56 yards in 11 plays to set up the tying field goal, completing six passes, including three to Jeff Bedell. U. San Diego lost four fumbles in the second half, setting up 10 Occidental points.

Boise State 30, Cal State Northridge 0--Vince Alcalde threw two touchdown passes to lead the Broncos’ nonconference rout of the Matadors at Boise, Ida.

Boise State (2-0) got off to a fast start, taking a 10-0 lead midway through the first quarter when Alcalde culminated an 83-yard drive with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Olaf Reinweld. Alcalde made it 17-0 at the end of the quarter with an 80-yard touchdown pass to Mike Hale.

Alcalde, who left the game in the second quarter, completed 9 of 16 passes for 184 yards.

Menlo 14, Whittier 7--Quarterback Gerold Montano scored on a one-yard touchdown run with 10:26 remaining to give the Oaks a nonconference win over the Poets at Menlo.

The touchdown was set up when Menlo recovered a Whittier fumble inside the 10-yard line, and three plays later Montano dived over to give Menlo the lead. Whittier’s lone touchdown came on a 69-yard run by Ramon Juarez that tied the game at 7-7 early in the fourth quarter.

Cal Poly San Luis Obispo 30, Humboldt State 24--The Mustangs rolled up 399 total yards as they defeated the Lumberjacks in a nonconference game at San Luis Obispo.

Cal Poly had 212 yards rushing, led by Todd Henderson with 76 yards, and 187 yards passing by junior quarterback Tom Sullivan, who completed 15 of 26 passes with 1 touchdown. Lance Martin had 7 receptions for 97 yards for the Mustangs, including a 14-yard touchdown catch.
