The Chicago Bears and the New York Giants, winners of the last two Super Bowls, meet tonight in a game whose significance both teams downplay (Channels 7 and 10, 6 p.m., PDT).

“It’s one game and it’s not life and death if we lose it,” says Giant wide receiver Phil McConkey. “It’s going to be a great test, a great game, but it is only one game.”

Mike Tomczak, the Bears’ starting quarterback, says: “It’s just one of 16 pivotal games for us. It’s important for us to win it, but we’ll have to come back the next week and beat Tampa Bay.”

The Giants lost their opener one year ago to the Dallas Cowboys but managed to regroup and win 17 of their next 18 games, including the Super Bowl.
