A 21-year-old San Carlos man, who was subdued Saturday by SWAT officers, pleaded innocent Wednesday to assault with a deadly weapon and other charges.

Bail for John Killian was set at $250,000 after Deputy Dist. Atty. Al Barret told the judge that Killian was “very, very dangerous.”

The incident began when Killian allegedly fired a shotgun at the phone in the home of a former girlfriend in San Carlos and later allegedly fired a gun at a motorist.

Traffic on Interstate 8 near San Diego State University was shut down temporarily after it was feared that Killian might shoot at motorists.

Killian surrendered peacefully and no shots were fired by SWAT officers. He reportedly told officers he wanted them to kill him and made quick movements as if he had a gun.

He also is charged with exhibiting a firearm in a threatening manner, hit-and-run driving, false imprisonment and burglary.

His attorney, Bill Saunders, asked for bail of $10,000.

But San Diego Municipal Judge Raymond Edwards said he felt Killian had “some type of mental problems” and set the bail at $250,000.

A bail review was set for Monday, and a preliminary hearing for Sept. 29.
