Anaheim : IRS Arrests Broker in 3-Year-Old Tax Case
An Anaheim mortgage broker who officials said fled the county three years ago after being charged with tax evasion has been arrested by Internal Revenue Service agents.
Jack Levelle Challender, 58, was arrested late Monday at the Harbor Boulevard office where was president of Citizens First Mortgage Co., according to Kemp Shiffer, a special agent with the IRS criminal investigation division. Shiffer said a tip from a confidential informant led to the arrest.
Challender once belonged to a tax protest group named Your Heritage Protection Assn., Shiffer said. In November, 1984, a Los Angeles federal grand jury indicted Challender on charges of failing to file tax returns in 1978-80. He owes about $57,000 in back taxes and penalties, according to the indictment.
“He only got back to Orange County six weeks ago,” Shiffer said. “He said he was living with relatives in Ohio.”
On Tuesday, a federal magistrate released Challender on $5,000 bail and ordered him to appear in court Monday.
A spokeswoman for Citizens First said she could not comment on Challender’s arrest or provide information about the company. Neither Challender or his attorney could be reached for comment.
