Soroptimist President

Former Whittier Mayor Marilynn K. Hofstetter, recently installed in Melbourne, Australia, as president of Soroptimist International, will be honored at a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at York House, 7722 York Ave., Whittier. Hofstetter, who joined the Soroptimist chapter in Whittier in 1954 and served on the City Council from 1960 to 1972, heads an organization of 84,000 business and professional women in 82 countries.

Commander for Nimitz

Navy Capt. Brent M. Bennitt, a 1960 graduate of Paramount High School, has taken command of the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Nimitz in ceremonies at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, Wash. The Nimitz is to begin sea trials before deployment to the western Pacific. Born in Lakewood, Bennitt flew 222 combat missions as a Naval aviator in the Vietnam War. He and his wife, the former Beverley Diane Brumfield of South Gate, have a 10-year-old daughter, Sarah.

4 Join Faculty at LBCC

Two part-time mathematics instructors, Sandra J. Wong and Michael A. Nasab, will join the full-time faculty at Long Beach City College this fall, and Robert L. Hook has been named carpentry instructor at the college. Also, Dr. John Smith, who has worked part-time for the physical education department since 1976, has been named full-time head of the college’s Human Performance Lab. Smith, former men’s volleyball coach at USC, earned his doctorate in the field of scientific research into physical activity.

Engineering Students Excel

Jerry Waldorf Jr. of Downey, Lourdes Nonato of Lakewood and Paul Ching-Hui Li of Montebello were among 73 students named to the dean’s honor list for the spring 1987 quarter at the School of Engineering and Applied Science at UCLA. Students on the list generally rank in the top 5% of their classes.

Redevelopment Director

Darwin G. (Bud) Pichetto has been appointed executive director of the Hawaiian Gardens Redevelopment Agency. Since 1975, Pichetto has been director of redevelopment in Pleasant Hill in Northern California. The Hawaiian Gardens agency has redeveloped 25 properties along Carson Street and Norwalk Boulevard and recently completed the Town Center project.

Kaiser Nurse Advances

Sandra Carter has been named associate director of nursing for maternal child health services at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Bellflower. Carter, of Huntington Beach, received a bachelor’s degree in nursing from California State University, Long Beach, and a master’s degree in nursing administration from UCLA.

Eagle Scouts Go Further

Nine Boy Scouts from Southeast Los Angeles County have taken part this summer in the Los Angeles Area Council’s Quest Beyond the Eagle program, designed to provide new challenges for boys who have already attained scouting’s highest rank. For two weeks, Brendan Brecht, Eric Grabiel, Jason Tetley and Jared Warner of Whittier, Raul Godinez and Colin Millett of Cerritos, Robert Nagel and Cris Sergieff of Downey and Ray White of Lakewood learned advanced mountaineering skills at Tioga Pass in the High Sierra, including glacier and rock climbing, and each survived a Solo Quest on his own in the wilderness.
