ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Mountain, Foothill Overrun Marina, 13-7

Share

Marina High School, which hasn’t had much luck moving the football all year, tried to move a mountain Friday night and failed.

Foothill’s John Mountain, a 6-foot, 200-pound junior tailback, rushed 32 times for 248 yards and one touchdown to power the Knights to a 13-7 win over Marina at Westminster High.

In running his season touchdown total to four, Mountain helped Foothill rack up its second straight victory and signal the Knights’ recovery from a humiliating 31-0 loss to Capistrano Valley in the season opener.

“We figured out where we were blowing it,” said Mountain, who had a 22-yard scoring run in the third quarter. “Everything seems to have come together.”

Well, not exactly. The Knights were penalized 11 times for 93 yards and lost a chance at a shutout when a blocked punt turned into a Marina score with 1:03 remaining.

“I was disappointed we couldn’t put them away,” said Foothill Coach Jerry Howell. “We dropped a couple of TD passes, and that punt was silly.

“But we’re getting better. We’re missing five starters and we’re going to be a stronger ballclub down the road.”

The future doesn’t look as bright for the Vikings. Only Eric Crocker’s 47-yard return of the blocked punt kept Marina from suffering its second straight shutout.

Foothill’s Greg Johnson intercepted two passes, matching the completion total of Marina quarterback David Schultz. The Vikings netted only 74 yards of total offense in dropping to 0-3.
