Steffi Graf of West Germany won two matches and advanced to the semifinals of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Hamburg, West Germany.

But Graf’s countrywoman, second-seeded Claudia Kohde-Kilsch, was upset by Ivona Kuczynska of Poland in the third round. The unseeded Kuczynska needed just over an hour to post the tournament’s biggest surprise, 6-2, 6-4, and reach the quarterfinals of the clay court tournament.

Friday’s schedule was crowded because much of the previous two days’ program had been washed out by rain.

Graf, seeded No. 1, first completed a rain-dalayed match against Bettina Fulco of Argentina, winning, 6-2, 6-4, then trounced West German Wiltrud Probst, 6-2, 6-0, to become the first semifinalist. Earlier in the day, Probst had upset Silke Meier of West Germany, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1.

Sandra Cecchini of Italy also won two matches Friday. She beat Arantxa Sanchez of Spain, 6-2, 6-1, then outlasted Italian Raffaela Reggi, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4.

Cecchini will play Graf in today’s first semifinal.

The other two quarterfinal matches also are scheduled today, along with the second semifinal.

Mats Wilander of Sweden, the No. 1-seeded player, routed Spanish teen-ager Tomas Carbonell, 6-0, 6-3, to advance to the semifinals of a $300,000 tournament at Barcelona, Spain.

The second-, third- and fourth-seeded players all were ousted by Argentinians.

Fifth-seeded Martin Jaite knocked out fourth-seeded Spaniard Emilio Sanchez, 6-3, 7-6; 10th-seeded Eduardo Bengoechea surprised second-seeded Miloslav Mecir of Czechoslovakia, 6-3, 6-1, and sixth-seeded Guillermo Perez eliminated third-seeded Andres Gomez of Ecuador. Gomez lost the first set, 6-3, and was trailing, 1-0, in the next when he retired with a sore shoulder.

In today’s semifinals, Wilander faces Perez and Jaite plays Bengoechea.
