Long Beach : Drunk Driver Billing OKd
Drunk driving suspects will have to reimburse the City of Long Beach for the costs of being arrested under a plan that received final approval Tuesday from the City Council.
The plan, one of several being considered to bill lawbreakers for the costs of police services, would force drunken driver suspects to pay $60 an hour for each of the officers who show up to arrest them, up to a maximum of $1,000.
The billing program will apply to suspects arrested for nine different alcohol-related crimes, ranging from misdemeanor drunk driving to injury accidents. Suspects will be billed whether or not they are eventually found guilty.
The city hopes to gross $800,000 a year from the drunk driver billing program.
