Two SDSU Linemen Out for the Season

Two reserve linemen on the San Diego State football team will not participate in team activities for the remainder of the 1987 season because of medical reasons, the athletic department said in a news release Wednesday.

The players are Art Aronson, a senior offensive guard from South San Francisco, and Wade Thoemmes, a sophomore defensive end from Honolulu.

The release said university personnel were prohibited from commenting on medical information because of federal privacy laws.

Athletic Director Fred Miller and Coach Denny Stolz declined comment on reasons for the action. Miller said the players would remain on scholarship.

Aronson said he had no comment when reached Wednesday afternoon. Thoemmes could not be reached for comment.

Aronson, 6-feet 1-inch and 255 pounds, played sparingly as a backup for Reggie Blaylock at right guard. Aronson is the brother of Doug Aronson, an All-Western Athletic Conference offensive guard in 1985 and 1986. Thoemmes, 6-3 and 235 pounds, had not played this season, Stolz said.

Stolz said Jason Swaney, a sophomore from El Paso, would move up on the depth chart at offensive guard and that Roman Fortin, second-team left guard, and Nick Subis, second-team right tackle, also could back up Blaylock.

Mario Mitchell (knee sprain) and Clarence Nunn (bruised shoulder nerve), starting cornerbacks who both missed the Oregon game Saturday, have been cleared to play Saturday at Wyoming, trainer Don Kaverman said. Mike Hooper (turf toe), a reserve defensive lineman, has not practiced this week but will be able to play Saturday, Kaverman said. . . . Stolz said that Rob Graff, starting defensive tackle, missed practice because of the flu. . . . Tommy Booker, freshman from Vista High School, might make his first start at tailback Saturday, Stolz said. Paul Hewitt, the regular starter, returned to practice Wednesday after missing two days because of the death of his grandfather. . . . Steve Clayton, Wyoming cornerback, will miss the game to undergo further tests after a neck injury he sustained last Saturday against Iowa State.
