Tennis Roundup : Pugh Wins at San Francisco and Moves Into Quarterfinals

Unseeded Jim Pugh of Palos Verdes advanced to the quarterfinals of the $293,000 Transamerica Open tennis tournament Wednesday with a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Woody Hunt at San Francisco’s Cow Palace.

In another afternoon match, Todd Nelson defeated Matt Anger, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3.

Pugh’s serve-and-volley game proved too much for Hunt in the first set. After going ahead 3-2, Pugh scored 12 straight points to win the set. In the second set, Pugh hit three aces in the deciding game. Pugh had earlier eliminated second-seeded Tim Mayotte.

Kate Gompert rallied for a 4-6, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Susan Mascarin to advance to the third round of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at New Orleans.

Gompert, the No. 5-seeded player from Rancho Mirage, Calif., trailed 4-1 in the final set but broke Mascarin in the sixth, eighth and 10th games.

Gompert led 4-2 in the first set, then lost four straight games. She won six straight games in the second set.

Top-seeded Chris Evert, who won the singles title two years ago, was scheduled to play at night against Anne Minter of Australia.

Lawson Duncan upset eighth-seeded Horacio de la Pena of Argentina, 6-2, 6-3, to move into the third round of a $100,000 clay-court tournament at Palermo, Sicily.

Two Argentines, No. 1-seeded Martin Jaite and No. 2-seeded Guillermo Perez-Roldan won their first-round matches.

Jaite defeated Italy’s Claudio Pistolesi, 7-5, 6-2, and Perez-Roldan breezed past Spain’s Juan Paguera, 6-3, 6-1.
