ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Untested Sunny Hills Keeps Rolling

There is no mistaking that Sunny Hills High School, now 4-0, has a very good football team, but one has to wonder if the Lancers will be tested before their showdown with La Habra in the final game of the season.

The Lancers had another breather Thursday night, coasting to a 20-2 victory over Canyon in front of 1,200 fans on Spaulding Field in Buena Park. It marked the third time this year that Sunny Hills’ defense hasn’t allowed a touchdown.

Sunny Hills figured to cruise through its nonleague schedule. Cypress was the only opponent that didn’t have a losing record in 1986, and the Centurions were 5-5. The Lancers’ league schedule doesn’t figure to be much tougher with two teams--Troy and Fullerton--currently struggling with 0-4 records.

“I guarantee you that once we get into league play, everyone will be playing us tough,” said Tim Devaney, Sunny Hills coach. “And I know Bill Brown will have Brea ready for us next week.”

Bryan Edmunds, the Lancers’ leading ballcarrier against Canyon with 72 yards rushing, isn’t so sure about that.

“I almost wish we were playing a quality team before we play La Habra,” he said. “I don’t want to put down anybody, but our schedule isn’t that good.”

Canyon (2-2) was supposed to give the Lancers problems, but Sunny Hills established its authority early by driving 76 yards after the opening kickoff for a 7-0 lead. The Lancers sputtered for most of the first half, but two fumble recoveries and an interception helped to shut out the Comanches in the second half.

Defensive lineman Arnold Cho had a key turnover, recovering Canyon quarterback Joe Frukawa’s fumble at the Comanche 45-yard line in the third quarter. The play set up Sunny Hills quarterback David Chisum’s one-yard plunge over center for a 13-2 lead.

Chisum earlier had thrown a three-yard touchdown pass to John Dysart, but the county’s leading passer has had better nights. He completed 11 of 20 passes for 131 yards, but he was sporadic at times.

“That wasn’t so much the quarterback as the dumb coach calling the plays,” Devaney said. “I didn’t ask David to do a lot. That was our basic passing game.”

Canyon managed 113 yards rushing against Sunny Hills, but the Comanches’ only score came when Vince Scheener tackled Lancer punter Carlos Miramontes in the end zone for a safety after a center snap sailed over Miramontes’ head.

“We made too many mistakes, and you can’t do that against a good team like Sunny Hills,” said Rod Hust, Canyon coach. “I thought we ran the ball pretty well, but we’ve thrown the ball better than we showed tonight.”
