At San Francisco, Sweden’s Peter Lundgren defeated Tim Wilkison, 6-3, 6-4, in the quarterfinals of the $293,000 Transamerica Open, where only one seeded player remains.
He happens to be the world’s No. 1 player, Ivan Lendl, who defeated Jim Grabb, 7-5, 6-2, late Thursday night. In Friday night’s quarterfinals, Lendl met Dan Goldie, who advanced with a 7-6, 7-6 victory over seventh-seeded Kevin Curren.
Lundgren, the highest-ranking Swedish player not on his country’s Davis Cup team, said it felt good not to be playing in the shadow of a higher-ranked Swede this week.
“It’s nice to be alone some times,” he said. “I’m more relaxed this week.”
