A former employee of the Newhall Signal being sought in the armed robbery of the newspaper’s office in Valencia was in jail Sunday in San Jose after surrendering to police, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department reported.

Sgt. Jack Barnes said Mark Rapko, 28, turned himself in to San Jose police Saturday night and is expected to be returned to Los Angeles County this week. A warrant for Rapko’s arrest was issued after the Sept. 28 robbery at the newspaper’s 24000 Creekside Drive office.

Sheriff’s deputies said several witnesses identified Rapko, of the Valencia area, as the man who carried a sawed-off shotgun into the office at 6:30 p.m. and took an estimated $5,000 in newspaper route collection money from employees. Rapko had been fired from his delivery job at the newspaper two weeks before the robbery, deputies said.
