American Federation of Musicians Local 47 announced Tuesday that it had reached agreement with the Los Angeles Philharmonic on a new three-year collective bargaining agreement covering 105 musicians in the orchestra. Minimum salary of the musicians will go up from $910 a week to $970 immediately and will reach $1,060 a week during the third year of the contract, pushing minimum annual wages to about $55,000 from $47,320. Some players in the orchestra make considerably more than the minimums, however, noted Local 47 President Bernie Fleischer. The contract also provides for improved pension benefits and some reductions in workload for Philharmonic players, particularly during the summer season at the Hollywood Bowl. Fleischer said the union was particularly pleased to have reached the new agreement swiftly and praised “the enlightened attitude” of negotiators for the Philharmonic Assn., noting that symphony orchestras are currently on strike in several U.S. cities.
