Tennis Roundup : Chang, 15, Wins Again to Reach Quarterfinals
Michael Chang, a 15-year-old amateur from Placentia, Calif., advanced to the quarterfinals of the $303,400 WCT tennis tournament at Scottsdale, Ariz., Thursday with a 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Ben Testerman.
Chang got a break when Testerman, 25, was penalized a point for a time violation with a 2-1 lead in the third set and never recovered his composure.
Peter Lundgren of Sweden beat Dan Goldie, 6-1, 6-1.
West Germany’s Steffi Graf defeated Bettina Bunge, 6-3, 6-2, in the second round of a $110,000 women’s tennis tournament at Mainz, West Germany.
Jimmy Connors rallied to defeat Stefan Edberg of Sweden, 4-6, 7-5, 6-3, and Ivan Lendl beat another Swede, Mikael Pernfors, 6-3, 6-3, in the the $500,000 AT&T; Challenge exhibition tournament at Atlanta.
Australian Davis Cupper John Fitzgerald reached the quarterfinals of the $150,000 Queensland Open with a 6-3, 7-6 victory over Simon Youl, also of Australia, at Brisbane, Australia.
