Santiago 7, Kennedy 7--Santiago’s Mike Mercado missed a 41-yard field goal attempt with no time remaining as the Cavaliers had to settle for a tie at Western High.

Mercado, who also missed two first-half field goal tries, got his chance to win the game when Kennedy was called for pass interference at the last second. The penalty advanced the ball to the Kennedy 26. Mercado’s kick was short.

Santiago (0-1, 2-2-1) opened the scoring midway in the third quarter on a one-yard sneak by quarterback Dana Ripley. The score was set up six plays earlier when Ruben Hurtado intercepted a pass by Kennedy quarterback Pete Montera on the Irish 30. Santiago had four interceptions.

Kennedy (1-0-1, 1-3-1), tied the score, 7-7, with two minutes gone in the fourth quarter on Ed Williams’ eight-yard touchdown run. Williams’ score ended a 60-yard, 8-play drive.

Both teams missed opportunities to score in the first half. A 27-yard field goal attempt by Richard Milne was blocked by Santiago’s Jason Marquez.

Mercado missed a 33-yard field goal attempt midway in the second period for Santiago, which got as far as the Kennedy five as halftime neared. But Mercado’s 20-yard field goal try was wide to the right.
