Boy, 14, Killed, 7 Wounded in Compton, Hollywood Shootings
A teen-ager was killed and seven people were wounded in weekend shootings in Compton and Hollywood, authorities said.
A 14-year-old boy was fatally wounded and three other teen-agers were shot at about 10:30 p.m. Saturday when three men in an orange Cadillac opened fire on a group of people outside a house in the 2000 block of Shauer Street in Compton, Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Deputy Stephen Lee said. About 15 shots were fired, Lee said.
Jesus Rivera died Sunday at Martin Luther King Jr. Medical Center, Lee said. The other victims were in stable condition. Lee identified them as Jorge Victoria, 18, Alfred Lopez, 16, and Jose Hernandez, 14. All reside in Compton.
Lee said no one was arrested in connection with the shooting, which authorities suspect was gang-related.
In Hollywood, two adults and two children were wounded late Saturday night in gunfire during an argument outside a church carnival.
Gabriel Chinchinga, 21, Evelia Castillo, 21, both of Los Angeles, a 15-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl were in stable condition Sunday at area hospitals, police said.
Chinchinga was arguing with another man when the shooting took place at 11:15 p.m. in front of a carnival sponsored by Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church, police said. The carnival, a fund-raiser staged in the church’s parking lot in the 6600 block of Selma Avenue, had closed a half hour earlier because of dwindling crowds, said Pastor Edward Callanan.
Police declined to identify the juvenile victims because the shooting may be gang-related, said Police Sgt. John Waters. No suspects were in custody.
More than 4,000 people attended the first two days of the three-day carnival, which began Friday, Callanan said. The church employs five security guards, who were on duty at the time of the shooting.
