Frank Robinson Reportedly Will Be Oriole GM

The Baltimore Orioles reportedly will name coach Frank Robinson as their next general manager, making him the second black to hold that position in major league baseball.

The first was Bill Lucas of the Atlanta Braves, named a director of player personnel in 1976 and vice president of baseball operations in 1978. When he died in 1979, his successor, John Mullen, was given the title of general manager.

An unnamed source quoted in the Baltimore Sun said team owner Edward Bennett Williams already has made up his mind to hire Robinson. The Washington Post carried a similar report.

Reached at his home in Beverly Hills, Robinson said that no one from the Orioles has contacted him.

“I haven’t heard from anyone,” he said. “I’m not getting my hopes up.”
