ORANGE COUNTY PREP FOOTBALL : Sunset League : McGehee Paces Huntington Beach’s 20-3 Win

When Huntington Beach beat Westminster, 20-3, Friday night, it was a victory for all the guys who tune their own cars and measure a day’s work in sweat.

Consider that Jason McGehee, a bullish 200-pound fullback, rushed for 107 yards on 23 carries to pace the Oilers in their Sunset League opener at Huntington Beach High School in a performance that could be called anything but flashy.

He gained first downs with two defenders on his back. He twice broke for 14-yard runs to keep drives from stalling. And, wouldn’t you know it, he didn’t even get any real glory because he failed to score a touchdown.

“We have to do it that way, and it also keeps their offense off the field,” said Oiler Coach George Pascoe of his offense. “We played really bad last week against Mater Dei, and we just needed to go out and dominate a good football team.”

McGehee, who provided a hefty portion of that domination, set up enough of the scores.

Such as the Oilers’ first touchdown with 1:23 remaining in the first quarter, when quarterback Eric Pettinato completed a 4-yard pass to Doobie Escobedo that capped a methodical 56-yard drive. McGehee accounted for 23 yards on four carries.

McGehee also provided the punch in a 61-yard drive that was capped by Casey Satterthwaite’s 37-yard field goal with 19 seconds remaining in the half.

And then there were the three rushes off tackle that each gained five yards and sustained a third-quarter drive that was climaxed when Pettinato hit Robert Shaw with an 11-yard touchdown pass. Pettinato completed 7 of 12 passes for 111 yards.

The Oilers (4-2, 1-0) scored their final points when Satterthwaite kicked a 27-yard field goal in the first minute of the fourth quarter.

Westminster (3-3, 0-1) scored in the second quarter when Troy Rossean kicked a 37-yard field goal. Brian O’Hara, Westminster’s top rusher, was held to 25 yards on 7 carries, and quarterback Bob Elliott completed only 5 of 13 passes for 54 yards.
