COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Southeast Roundup : Alabama’s Dunn Not Satisfied With 41-22 Win Over Tennessee

Freshman Jeff Dunn, starting his first game, led unranked Alabama to a 41-22 Southeastern Conference victory over No. 8-ranked Tennessee at Birmingham, Ala., Saturday night, then said he wants to do more.

“I won’t celebrate until after a bowl win or an SEC championship,” Dunn said after passing for 229 yards, including a record-breaking 90-yard scoring play.

Dunn, taking over because of injuries to David Smith and Vince Sutton, “got off to one of the best starts I’ve ever seen in college football,” Alabama Coach Bill Curry said.

Tennessee Coach Johnny Majors, noting his team’s six turnovers, said: “We were mighty good to them and they were also mighty good to themselves.”

The Crimson Tide, he said, was “really keyed up, and they played a fantastic ballgame, both offensively and defensively. They shut our running game down.”

The Volunteers got only 51 yards rushing.

The outcome of the first night meeting in the 70-game series put Alabama at 5-2 overall and 2-1 in the SEC, and dropped Tennessee to 4-1-1 and 1-1-1. It was the second straight blowout of the Volunteers by the Crimson Tide, who defeated Tennessee, 56-28, last year in Knoxville.

Alabama, upset by Memphis State, 13-10, a week ago, came up with five interceptions, four on passes by Jeff Francis, and recovered two Tennessee fumbles.

Although Francis passed for 358 yards, Alabama’s interceptions stymied the Volunteers until the deficit was too big to overcome.

Auburn 20, Georgia Tech 10--At Atlanta, Jeff Burger completed a four-yard pass to Lawyer Tillman with 24 seconds remaining to help the fifth-ranked Tigers stave off an upset loss to the Yellow Jackets.

The pass completed a 91-yard drive that began with 4:01 to play and produced the only touchdown by the Auburn offense in the game. The Tigers had other opportunities, but Win Lyle failed on field goal attempts from 51, 32 and 42 yards.

Auburn scored again on the final play of the game when Aundray Bruce returned an interception, his third of the day, 45 yards and the teams left the field without attempting the extra point.

It was Auburn’s ninth consecutive victory in the series, the second oldest in the South. It boosted Auburn’s lead to 47-39-4 and came in the last game between the two until 1992.

Auburn improved to 5-0-1, and Tech fell to 2-4.

Florida 34, Temple 3--Emmitt Smith ran for 175 yards in 23 carries at Gainesville, Fla., to become the first freshman in college football history to gain more than 1,000 yards in 7 games as the 14th-ranked Gators rolled past the Owls.

Smith, who now has 1,011 yards this season, also scored his 11th touchdown on a two-yard run, and Kerwin Bell passed for two touchdowns in the first quarter as Florida improved its record to 5-2.

Temple, playing without star tailback Todd McNair, dropped to 3-4 before a crowd of 74,286 at Florida Field.

Smith, a 201-pound running back, sat out most of the second quarter with a sprained right wrist. It was the sixth consecutive game in which Smith went over the 100-yard mark.

Tony Dorsett and Herschel Walker both ran for more than 1,000 yards as freshmen, but didn’t do it until the eighth game of their college careers.

In five starts, Smith has averaged 177.2 yards and his average of 139.3 per game before Saturday was second in the nation to Oklahoma State’s Thurman Thomas.

Bell completed 15 of 22 passes for 212 yards. The touchdown passes were the 52nd and 53rd of Bell’s career, moving him into a tie for second place on the Southeastern Conference’s all-time list with Auburn’s Pat Sullivan. Florida’s John Reaves holds the SEC career record of 54.

Georgia 52, Vanderbilt 24--At Nashville, Tenn., reserve quarterback Wayne Johnson scored on runs of 11, 3 and 6 yards in the second half to ignite the 18th-ranked Bulldogs.

The Bulldogs (5-2 and 2-1) trailed 14-0 in the first quarter and 21-19 at the half, but Johnson took over for James Jackson, who injured his ankle on the final play of the first half, and led scoring drives of 54, 96 and 46 yards.

Rodney Hampton rushed for 153 yards in 15 carries, and Lars Tate added 102 yards in 20 attempts to key a Georgia ground game that amassed 454 yards to 167 for Vanderbilt (1-5 and 0-3).

Mississippi 24, SW Louisiana 14--At Oxford, Miss., John Darnell completed a pair of touchdown passes to split end Willie Green to lead the Rebels over the Ragin’ Cajuns.

The victory improved Ole Miss to 2-5. The Ragin’ Cajuns dropped to 2-4.

S. Mississippi 18, Mississippi St. 14--Sophomore quarterback Alrick Young threw for one fourth-quarter touchdown and guided the Golden Eagles (3-3) to another as they rallied to beat the Bulldogs (3-3) at Jackson, Miss.
