Scott Erney threw touchdown passes on plays of 10 and 63 yards to Eric Young, and Rutgers scored on five consecutive possessions as the Scarlet Knights put a dent in Boston College’s bowl plans and a glimmer in their own by defeating the Eagles, 38-24, Saturday at Piscataway, N.J.

Elmer Cook, a member of the Citrus Bowl board of directors, was at the game to scout Boston College, but left more impressed by Rutgers, which is 4-2. BC fell to 4-3.

Besides Erney’s touchdown passes, Bart Graf and Curtis Stephens scored on 1-yard dives and Carmen Sclafani kicked a 27-yard field goal before a homecoming crowd of 30,252, the third-largest in Rutgers Stadium history.

Yale 27, Columbia 13--The Lions’ major-college record losing streak was extended to 36 games as the Bulldogs scored an Ivy League victory at New York.

Columbia hasn’t won since Oct. 15, 1983, when it beat Yale, 21-18, at the Yale Bowl. Since then, Columbia is winless in 39 games, including two ties, and has lost all 20 games played in its new stadium, which was opened in 1984.

“Demoralizing them doesn’t do any good,” said Yale Coach Carmen Cozza, explaining why he went to reserves early in the fourth quarter after Yale quarterback Kelly Ryan threw his third touchdown pass to give Yale a 27-7 lead.

The Lions are 0-5 this season, 0-4 in the league. Yale is 3-2 and 1-1.

Columbia scored in the first quarter on a pass off a fake punt that went to John Robinson, normally a linebacker, who transferred to Columbia from Southern Methodist.

Yale tight end Dean Athanasia caught two of Ryan’s touchdown passes and finished with 6 catches for 90 yards.

Colgate 22, Army 20--Quarterback Damon Phelan ran for two touchdowns and threw for a third, and tailback Kenny Gamble gained 188 yards in 31 carries to move into second place on the all-time Division I-AA rushing list as the Red Raiders held off a second-half Cadet rally to win at West Point, N.Y.

Gamble, the division’s all-purpose yardage record-holder, has 4,630 yards rushing. He trails Frank Hawkins, the Raider fullback who gained 5,333 yards at Nevado Reno.

Phelan started the season as Colgate’s top quarterback, proved erratic and was moved to flanker last week. But Coach Fred Dunlap switched him back to quarterback, and Phelan responded by completing 22 of 29 passes for 263 yards.

Colgate is 4-3, Army 2-4.

Navy 38, Penn 28--Freshman quarterback Alton Grizzard carried 23 times for 225 yards and 3 touchdowns as the Midshipmen drove the length of the field the first four times they had the ball and beat the Quakers at Philadelphia.

Navy (1-5) used a wishbone offense. Penn is 2-3.

W. Virginia 45, Cincinnati 17--Freshman quarterback Major Harris ran 64 yards for a touchdown on the second play of the game, and the Mountaineers scored on their first four possessions of the second half to rout the Bearcats at Morgantown, W.Va.

Harris also scored on a 16-yard quarterback sneak and finished with 126 yards rushing--111 in 4 first-half carries. He also completed 9 of 14 passes for 120 yards.

Brown 23, Cornell 15--Quarterback Mark Donovan ran 66 yards for the deciding touchdown on an option play early in the third quarter as the Bruins, benefiting from four interceptions, beat the Big Red in an Ivy League game at Providence, R.I.

Brown (4-1, 3-1) is in first place in the Ivy League, and Cornell (4-1, 2-1) is tied for second with Harvard, Penn and Princeton.

Harvard 42, Dartmouth 3--Tom Yohe completed 16 of 26 passes for 237 yards and 3 touchdowns to lead the Crimson (4-1, 2-1) over the Big Green (1-4, 0-2) in an Ivy League game at Cambridge, Mass.

Harvard’s Tony Hinz, who carried 12 times for 152 yards, had touchdown runs of 3 and 73 yards.

Princeton 16, Lehigh 15--Rob Goodwin kicked his third field goal of the game, a 39-yarder, with no time left on the clock to cap a 77-yard hurry-up scoring drive and give the Tigers (4-1) a victory over the Engineers (3-3) at Princeton, N.J.
