Dutch Woman Retains Tennis Championship

Chantal Vandierendonck of the Netherlands won her third consecutive women’s open title at the U.S. Open Wheelchair Tennis Championships Saturday at the Racquet Club of Irvine.

Top-seeded Vandierendonck, the top-ranked female player in the world, defeated second-seeded Monique VandenBosch, also of the Netherlands, 6-4, 6-7, 6-2.

In the men’s open semifinals, top-seeded Brad Parks of San Clemente defeated sixth-seeded Dave Kiley of San Dimas, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2, and fourth-seeded Laurent Giammartini of Cannes, France, defeated fifth-seeded Chip Turner of Carmichael, Calif., 6-3, 5-7, 6-3. Parks and Giammartini will meet in the men’s final at 1 p.m. today.

In the men’s A division semifinals, Scott Douglas of Basking Ridge, N.J., defeated Phillippe Bergeard of France, 6-4, 6-1, and Tab Black of Valdez, Tex., defeated Mike Schlappi of Tempe, Ariz., 6-1, 6-2.

The men’s B division final will match Hennie Hol of the Netherlands, who defeated John Box of Orange, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1, and Great Britain’s Mark Kleingeld, who defeated Mike Brady of Houston, 6-3, 7-5.
