Local News in Brief : Vandals Cause Sewage Spill in Chatsworth

Share

About 30,000 gallons of sewage spilled from a Chatsworth sewer into Santa Susana Creek after vandals lifted a 250-pound manhole cover and clogged a sewer line with rocks, tree limbs and asphalt, authorities said Monday.

Officials said the spill posed no health threat.

The spill occurred between 4 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. Saturday in a 15-foot sewer line in a cul-de-sac near Topanga Canyon Boulevard and Plummer Street, said Chuck Ellis, a spokesman for the Department of Public Works.

Work crews from the Bureau of Sanitation cleared the blockage by 6:30 p.m. and vacuumed much of the sewage into another nearby sewer line, Ellis said.

The creek water was chlorinated as a safety measure, he said.

County and state health departments and environmental agencies were immediately notified of the spill, and laboratory personnel took water samples above and below the Tillman plant to check contamination levels, Ellis said.

Test results showed the spill does not pose a health threat, he said.
