Local News in Brief : Tough Dog Law Advances
The Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors has given initial approval to a measure enabling animal control officers to impound potentially vicious dogs.
The measure, subject to a second vote by the board, includes an “impound-now, ask-questions-later” provision, according to George Baca, chief deputy director of the Department of Animal Care and Control.
Under the revised ordinance given preliminary approval Tuesday, animal control officers would be able to impound “potentially dangerous” dogs from their owners’ property immediately, rather than waiting for complaints of an attack. A hearing board would review each impoundment case.
Under the measure, dog owners who allow their pets to get loose or bite someone could face misdemeanor charges punishable by up to six months in jail and a $500 fine.
