Tennis Roundup : Connors Is Upset by Fitzgerald; Lendl, Edberg, Becker Win

Jimmy Connors lost in the second round of the $375,000 Seiko Super tennis tournament at Toyko Thursday, while Ivan Lendl of Czechoslovakia, Stefan Edberg of Sweden and Boris Becker of West Germany advanced to the quarterfinals.

Connors, seeded No. 4, was upset by Australian John Fitzgerald, 6-3, 6-1.

Lendl, the world’s top-ranked player, routed Robert Seguso, ranked 120th, 6-2, 6-0, in less than an hour.

Edberg, ranked second, made short work of Johan Carlsson, 6-0, 6-2, in 59 minutes.

Becker, ranked fourth, had eight aces and broke service in the third and seventh games of the first set and in the first and ninth games of the second set while trouncing compatriot Damir Keretic, 6-2, 6-3.

At Brighton, England, top-seeded Pam Shriver eased into the quarterfinals of the $200,000 Volvo women’s tournament with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Sara Gomer, the last Briton in the field.

The left-handed Gomer is ranked 74th in the world, while Shriver is No. 5.

In the quarterfinals, Shriver will play sixth-seeded Katerina Maleeva of Bulgaria, who downed American Lisa Bonder, 6-2, 6-3. In another second-round match, eighth-seeded Sandra Cecchini of Italy beat Larissa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-0.
