COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Big Eight Roundup : Oklahoma Overcomes Nine Fumbles in 24-6 Victory Over Colorado

Jamelle Holieway accounted for 200 yards Saturday night to help No. 1-ranked Oklahoma shake early doldrums for a 24-6 victory over Colorado in the Sooners’ first night game ever at Norman, Okla.

“Jamelle did what he had to do to get us going,” Coach Barry Switzer said of his quarterback, who rushed 27 times for 146 yards and completed 3 of 6 passes for 54 yards as Oklahoma overcame nine fumbles--three of which were lost--and six penalties to raise its record to 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the Big Eight.

With the Sooners leading only 10-6 at halftime, Holieway set up the touchdown that helped give them breathing room when he darted 28 yards on the first play of the second half. On the next play, fullback Lydell Carr went 21 yards for a score that made it 17-6.

Carr carried 16 times for 100 yards as Oklahoma rolled up 412 yards on offense to 213 for Colorado (4-3 and 1-2).

Oklahoma also scored on runs of 23 yards from Anthony Stafford and 1 yard from Patrick Collins, and a 48-yard field goal from R.D. Lashar.

Eric Hannah kicked field goals of 20 and 32 yards, both in the second quarter, to account for Colorado’s only points.

Nebraska 56, Kansas St. 3--Kansas State Coach Stan Parrish, an expert on getting belted by No. 1 Oklahoma and No. 2 Nebraska, said he could not pick the better team.

Nebraska’s blowout Saturday at Lincoln, Neb., came a week after the Wildcats were battered, 59-10, by Oklahoma.

“They’re No. 1 and No. 1-A,” Parrish said after the Cornhuskers overwhelmed Kansas State with 662 total yards and 459 rushing. “I think Nebraska is stronger, but Oklahoma is quicker.”

The Cornhuskers are 7-0 overall, 3-0 in the Big Eight and two games away from a showdown against No. 1 Oklahoma on Nov. 21.

Kansas State is 0-7 and has lost 12 straight games.

Nebraska, which has not allowed a touchdown in 13 quarters, led at halftime, 35-3, limiting Kansas State to a 29-yard field goal by Mark Porter after a turnover.

Nebraska’s starting quarterback Steve Taylor suffered a slightly sprained left ankle but is expected to play next week against Missouri.

Oklahoma St. 24, Missouri 20--At Columbia, Mo., Mike Gundy completed touchdown passes of 12 and 48 yards to split end Hart Lee Dykes as the No. 19 Cowboys came from behind to edge the Tigers.

The Cowboys overcame deficits of 17-7 and 20-17 to beat the penalty-plagued Tigers and move to 6-1 overall, 2-1 in the Big Eight.

Oklahoma State scored its winning touchdown with 7:46 left when Gundy passed six yards to tight end J.R. Dillard. Gundy, who completed 18 of 28 passes for 244 yards, passed to Dykes for an 18-yard gain during the drive. In all, Dykes caught 6 passes for 107 yards.

The Cowboys appeared stopped with a fourth and 10 at the Missouri 11, but the Tigers were called for a face mask violation.

Robert Delpino and Darrell Wallace each scored a touchdown for the Tigers (4-3 and 2-1), and Tom Whelihan kicked two field goals, including a 47-yarder, his longest of the season.

Iowa State 42, Kansas 28--Joe Henderson ran for 226 yards and 2 touchdowns, and Anthony Hoskins returned an interception for a touchdown at Lawrence, Kan., as the Cyclones improved to 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the Big Eight.

Henderson, a 202-pound junior, had 33 carries and scored on runs of 1 and 24 yards and became only the fourth Iowa State runner to rush for more than 200 yards and the first since 1982.

Kansas, which has lost 13 of its last 14 games, dropped to 1-6 and 0-3.
