COLLEGE FOOTBALL : South Roundup : North Carolina State Makes It Two Straight Over Clemson, 30-28

Linebacker Mark Smith knew North Carolina State wasn’t given much chance of defeating seventh-ranked Clemson for the second straight year.

But the Wolfpack did it anyway, withstanding a 28-point second- half rally to upset the Tigers, 30-28, Saturday in an Atlantic Coast Conference game at Clemson, S.C.

“A win is a win,” Smith said. “Last year we beat them and everybody said there was no way we could beat them again this year.

“But we knew we could,” he said. “We just had to prove it.”

The Wolfpack did just that, in part by doing what the Tigers normally do best--controlling the ball. N.C. State had the ball for 40:52, compared to Clemson’s 19:08.

Clemson Coach Danny Ford said his team just got too far behind but made a “tremendous” comeback from a 30-0 halftime deficit.

“Guess we just got unglued in the first half. No particular reason,” Ford said. “It’s just a situation that just happened that we didn’t perform very well.”

The Tigers rallied for 28 points in the final 15:58 on drives of 84, 47, 80 and 81 yards. Clemson drove to the N.C. State 44 with 1:18 to go, but the drive ended when Rodney Williams’ pass on fourth down fell incomplete.

Williams set an NCAA record with 46 passes in the second half. He wound up completing 21 of 53 for 271 yards--all individual school records.

The Tigers, defending ACC champions, fell to 6-1 and 3-1 after losing for the first time since N.C. State beat them a year ago, 27-3. The Wolfpack is 3-4 and 3-2.

Miami (Fla.) 48, Cincinnati 10--Steve Walsh threw a pair of third-quarter touchdown passes and three Miami runners topped 100 yards as the third-ranked Hurricanes drubbed the Bearcats at Cincinnati.

Miami (5-0) scored 21 third-quarter points to overcome a slow start en route to its 26th consecutive regular-season victory, the longest current winning streak by a Division I-A school.

Walsh, who completed 13 of 24 attempts for 128 yards, threw a 13-yard touchdown pass to Brian Blades and a 7-yarder to Charles Henry on Miami’s first possessions of the second half to deflate Cincinnati (2-5).

Melvin Bratton rushed for 114 yards and a touchdown, Warren Williams added 101 yards and a touchdown, and Leonard Conley ran for 120 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Maryland 23, Duke 22--Neil O’Donnell, taking over for injured Dan Henning, threw a five-yard touchdown pass to Ferrell Edmonds with 1:55 remaining and then hit Vernon Joines for a two-point conversion as the Terrapins came back from a 22-7 deficit to beat the Blue Devils in an ACC game at College Park, Md.

O’Donnell, a red-shirt sophomore, completed 23 of 33 passes for 298 yards. Henning complained of dizziness after a head-on collision in the first quarter.

Maryland improved to 4-3 overall and 3-1 in the ACC. Duke (3-4 and 0-3) dropped its fourth straight.

S. Carolina 34, E. Carolina 12--At Columbia, S.C., sophomore Todd Ellis became the Gamecocks’ all-time passing leader as he threw for 425 yards and a touchdown, completing 21 of 33 attempts.

It was the first time in school history a quarterback has passed for more than 400 yards in a game.

The Gamecocks are 5-2. East Carolina is 4-4.

Virginia 35, Wake Forest 21--At Charlottesville, Va., Scott Secules completed 20 of 25 passes for 220 yards and 1 touchdown as Virginia improved to 4-4 overall, 2-2 in the ACC, while the Demon Deacons dropped to 5-2 and 2-2.

Tulane 57, Virginia Tech 38--At New Orleans, Marvin Allen scored one touchdown on a 76-yard screen pass and three on runs of 1, 4 and 1 yard as the Green Wave (4-3) overwhelmed the Hokies (1-6).

S. Mississippi 17, Memphis St. 14--At Memphis, Shelton Gandy rushed for 180 yards as the Golden Eagles (4-3) handed Memphis State its first home defeat this year and dropped the Tigers to 3-4.
