The Torrance City Council has approved establishment of a storefront police station in the Del Amo Fashion Center to deal with increased crime.

Under an arrangement with the Torrance Co., which operates the mall, 68% of the salaries of three police officers will be paid by the mall.

Crime at the shopping center, the largest enclosed shopping mall in the nation, accounts for about 20% of all crime in Torrance.

From Sept. 1, 1985, to Jan. 1, 1987, a two-officer police detail that patroled the mall made 366 felony arrests, 737 misdemeanor arrests, issued almost 500 traffic citations and completed more than 1,500 reports.

The Torrance action came after the city reviewed police operations in other malls--including the Glendale Galleria, South Coast Plaza and Hawthorne Mall--and determined that the Del Amo facility needed more police.
