Granite Hills and Mount Miguel could muster little offense, so their Grossmont 3-A League game was up to the defenses Friday night.

That was too bad for visiting Granite Hills.

Unbeaten Mount Miguel, with the No. 1 defense in the county, was a 14-0 winner.

Indeed, the Mount Miguel defense set up the first touchdown when it recovered a fumble at the Granite Hills 29.

Three plays later, Mount Miguel quarterback Anthony Rivera ran 35 yards up the middle past a blitzing defense for a touchdown.

A bad snap on a Granite Hills punt set up Mount Miguel’s second touchdown. The snap sailed over the punter’s head and Mount Miguel recovered the ball on the Eagles’ 15-yard line. Three plays later, Rivera threw a 16-yard scoring pass to Lew Willis.

Mount Miguel sacked Granite Hills quarterback Matt Mikolajewski six times for minus 35 yards, including three times in the second half.

Entering its final series of the game, Granite Hills (4-4, 2-1) had four yards total offense. Mount Miguel did not fare much better, as the Matadors had just five first downs in the game, two by penalty, two on touchdowns and one on an eight-yard run in the fourth quarter.

In the other Grossmont 3-A game, Helix defeated Monte Vista, 27-14.
