COLLEGE FOOTBALL : Boston College Stays on the Ground and Runs Over No. 13 Tennessee, 20-18

Two teams with quarterback problems knew they had to run well Saturday. Boston College was successful, and it upset 13th-ranked Tennessee, 20-18.

Willie Hislop and Tim Frager ran for touchdowns in the first nine minutes of the second half to give Boston College a 20-3 lead.

The Eagles, known as a passing team, unleashed a 343-yard running attack led by Jim Bell’s 177 yards in 39 carries. They gained only 87 yards passing.

Injuries to backups had left Mike Power, the usual starter, as Boston College’s only experienced quarterback.

“We decided coming in we weren’t going to throw as much because we had one quarterback and we didn’t want him to get blind-sided and get hurt,” Boston College Coach Jack Bicknell said.

Tennessee was also forced to stay on the ground as first-string quarterback Jeff Francis’ ankle injury kept him out of the game. The Volunteers managed only 111 yards rushing.

Boston College is 5-4, and the Volunteers are 5-2-1.
