South Coast Conference : Tie Drops Golden West From First Place

Golden West and Mt. San Antonio colleges played to a 13-13 tie in a South Coast Conference football game in front of 200 at Mt. San Antonio Saturday, dropping Golden West from a share of first place in the conference.

Golden West (4-2-1, 3-0-1) is half a game behind El Camino (7-0, 4-0), which defeated Compton, 12-7, Saturday.

Mt. SAC (2-4-1, 0-3-1) had two opportunities to win the game in the final quarter, but kicker Kevin Buckner missed a 36-yard field goal with 6:47 left and a 34-yarder with 14 seconds left.

Golden West’s Spencer LaPlaca missed two field goal attempts, including a 23-yarder with 13:27 left in the game.

Mt. SAC’s Lee Barrett led all rushers with 113 yards in 32 carries and scored both touchdowns, on runs of seven and five yards in the second quarter.

Golden West’s Corey Dickson, who had 93 yards in 25 carries, scored on a seven-yard run in the second quarter. Golden West trailed at the half, 13-6.

Quarterback Bill Marler threw an eight-yard pass for a touchdown early in the third quarter, and LaPlaca kicked the extra point to tie the score, 13-13.

In other South Coast Conference play:

Fullerton 6, Cerritos 6--Fullerton running back Andrew Greer scored on a four-yard touchdown run with 6:05 left in the game at Fullerton District Stadium for the tie. But Rodney Bowman blocked Fullerton kicker Craig Ross’ extra point attempt.

Frank Mazzotta had given Cerritos a 6-0 lead in the first quarter on a 16-yard touchdown reception from quarterback Shane Norris.

Greer gained 148 yards in 29 carries for Fullerton (3-3-1, 2-1-1). Andre Wooten rushed for 131 yards in 29 carries for Cerritos (4-2-1, 2-1-1).
