Two spills over the weekend sent an estimated 72,000 gallons of untreated sewage into Chollas Creek and 100 gallons onto a section of Pacific Beach, public health authorities reported.

About 10 a.m. Saturday, a sewer line was blocked by debris near Elwood Street and Geneva Avenue in the Encanto area of East San Diego, said Jim Frank, a spokesman for the San Diego County Department of Health Services.

The blockage sent about 72,000 gallons of raw sewage into a storm drain system that enters Chollas Creek, he said. City crews have posted warning signs at the point where the storm drain enters the creek, according to Frank.

He said the posting is precautionary, and there was no visible indication that any of the sewage had reached the creek. Chollas Creek eventually empties into San Diego Bay near the 32nd Street Naval Station.

About 11:30 a.m. Sunday, a blocked sewer main spilled about 100 gallons of raw sewage at the western end of Grand Avenue in Pacific Beach, Frank said. He said the sewage flowed onto the beach but never made it into the ocean. The spill was contained late Sunday afternoon, he said.
