Former heavyweight champion Jersey Joe Walcott, 73, was in stable condition after undergoing surgery earlier this week at Howard University Hospital in Washington. A hospital spokesman said he did not know what type of surgery was performed but that Walcott, who held the title in 1951-52, was “resting comfortably.”
