College Roundup : Titan Soccer Team Defeats Irvine in Overtime

Cal State Fullerton defeated UC Irvine, 2-0, in overtime in a Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. men’s soccer match Friday at Titan Field.

Chuck Smoot scored the game-winner for Fullerton a little more than two minutes into overtime on an assist from Greg Cipolla.

Four minutes later, Cipolla scored from the left side of Irvine goaltender Michael Gartlan.

Freshman goalkeeper Jay Nettekoven had two saves for the Titans in his third shutout of the season.

Fullerton (12-7, 5-4) will play host to conference rival UC Santa Barbara in the regular-season finale Sunday at 2 p.m.

The Anteaters are 6-12 and 3-7.

In Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. women’s volleyball:

University of the Pacific 3, UC Irvine 0--Mary Miller had 16 kills to lead Pacific, the second-ranked team in the nation, to a 15-5, 15-3, 15-10 sweep of Irvine at Pacific.

Irvine (9-12, 4-10) was led by Kris Roberts (10 kills) and Kim Collins (8 kills). Pacific is 11-2, 21-3.

San Diego State 3, Cal State Fullerton 0--Despite 14 kills by Fullerton’s Susan Herman, San Diego State (11-15, 6-9) won at home.

Cal State Fullerton is 9-21, 1-15.

In CCAA volleyball:

Chapman 3, Cal Poly Pomona 1--Janet Jenson had 14 kills and 5 blocks to lead the Panthers (12-18, 5-4) to the 11-15, 15-2, 15-6, 15-13 victory at Orange.

Chapman was helped by Tammy Light and Christy Anderson with 10 kills each.

The Broncos are 13-13 and 5-5.

In CCAA water polo:

Chapman 13, UC Riverside 11--Brian Cummings scored five goals and Tommy Moran and Woody Harter added three goals each to lead the Panthers (7-23) at Orange. Chapman goalie Carter Moe made 10 saves.
