NHL Roundup : Quebec Defeats Washington to Remain Unbeaten on Road

It has always been difficult for even the outstanding teams to win consistently on the road in the National Hockey League.

But in the first month this season, the Quebec Nordiques have had more trouble winning at home. They’ve been almost perfect on the road.

Michel Goulet scored on power plays in both the first and third periods at Landover, Md., Friday night to lead the Nordiques to a 4-1 victory over the Washington Capitals.

While the Nordiques have only a 3-5-0 record on home ice, they are the only unbeaten team on the road, with a 4-0-1 record.

In addition to running his own goal total to 11, Goulet also set up Lane Lambert’s goal in the second period.

“I think we play with more confidence on the road,” Goulet said. “We have a lot of new faces, and sometimes the fans at home are rough on them when we’re behind.”

Winnipeg 6, Chicago 3--Doug Smail scored twice at Winnipeg, and the Jets beat the Blackhawks for the first time in almost two years. The Blackhawks are winless in the last seven games.

Goaltender Daniel Berthiaume stopped 23 shots to pick up his third victory of the season.

Detroit 3, Hartford 1--Bob Probert set up the Red Wings’ first two goals at Detroit, and goaltender Greg Stefan stopped 28 shots to end the Whalers’ seven-game unbeaten string.
