NHRA at Pomona : Oswald Tops Funny Car Qualifiers

Mark Oswald, a 34-year-old funny car driver from Cincinnati, was the class of the field Friday as qualifying resumed in the rain-delayed National Hot Rod Assn. Winston Finals at Pomona Raceway. The $871,850 event is the final of the 14-race series.

Oswald drove his Ford Thunderbird to an elapsed time of 5.494 seconds with a top speed of 260.26 m.p.h. and heads the 16-car field. His time was a Finals record.

Don Prudhomme of Granada Hills qualified his Pontiac Trans Am second at 5.500 and 266.03, followed by Tom McEwen of Fountain Valley in a Corvette at 5.501 and 260.56, and Kenny Bernstein of Newport Beach, seeking his third straight Finals funny car victory, in a Buick LeSabre at 5.504 and 260.19.

Top fuel and pro stock cars did not have an official qualifying session Friday.

Qualifying continues today with two additional sessions for all professional competitors plus the Cragar/Weld Top Fuel race. Final eliminations are scheduled Sunday.
