King Way Vote

Share

It is sad to no longer see the name of Martin Luther King honored on a San Diego street. Proponents of Market Street say, “It wasn’t a matter of racism, we wanted our street back.” Shame on them; they should have been proud to have had their businesses on Martin Luther King Way.

But everyone from Maureen O’Connor to Susan Golding to Mohammed Abdullah is saying it wasn’t racism. It was a matter of heritage and sentiment, or the high-handed way the City Council foisted this on the city, or the voters were confused by the wording of the measure on Election Day.

But there is a solution. We can overcome all of these problems, and really show our appreciation for Martin Luther King. Let’s change the name of Broadway to Martin Luther King Boulevard. Let us put this on the next ballot with a YES meaning we would support using the name of Martin Luther King on one of our most important streets. Let all of the Market Street supporters work to change Broadway to Martin Luther King Boulevard. In this way no one can ever call San Diego a racist city.
