At the Sierra Club’s request, officials in Sequoia National Forest have indefinitely delayed harvesting of salvage timber in a 170-acre section of giant sequoias damaged by a fire in September. A Sierra Club spokesman, John Rasmussen, said the group is worried about effects the timber harvest would have on the giant sequoias in the Redwood Mountain grove. “We don’t think they should be cutting redwoods within the grove without a redwood management plan,” Rasmussen said. Such a plan would determine whether logging could be safely completed inside the sequoia groves and what precautions should be taken to prevent damage to the towering trees not damaged by the fire.
