Tennis Roundup : Nystrom Is Stopped in First Round

Milan Srejber of Czechoslovakia upset fourth-seeded Joakim Nystrom of Sweden, 6-2, 6-7, 6-1, Tuesday in the first round of the $300,000 Benson and Hedges tournament at Wembley, England.

There was first-round success, too, for Alexander Volkov of the Soviet Union, who defeated Peter Fleming, 6-2, 4-6, 6-2, to set up a likely second-round meeting with top-seeded Ivan Lendl.

Lendl, the world’s No. 1 player, plays Ronald Agenor of Haiti today.

Another Soviet, Andrei Chesnokov, also make it to the second round by eliminating Mikael Pernfors of Sweden, 6-3, 7-5.

Anders Jarryd of Sweden beat Guy Forget of France, 6-4, 6-3; Henri Leconte of France defeated Kevin Curren, 6-3, 7-6, and Rick Leach ousted Tomas Smid of Czechoslovakia, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3, in other matches.

It took Martina Navratilova only 38 minutes to defeat Catherine Suire of France, 6-0, 6-1, in a first-round match of a $150,000 Virginia Slims tournament at Chicago.

Navratilova won the first 11 games, allowing Suire just 11 points.

Suire, ranked 139th in the world, finally held serve with the help of an ace before Navratilova ran out the match.

Also advancing to the second round was Lori McNeil, who defeated Beverly Bowes, 6-4, 6-2. In other first-round matches, Bettina Bunge beat Larisa Savchenko of the Soviet Union, 6-2, 6-1; Mary Joe Fernandez defeated Carol Christian of San Bernardino, 6-1, 6-1, and Natalia Zvereva of the Soviet Union eliminated Betsy Nagelsen, 6-3, 6-2.

At Frankfurt, West Germany, Ben Testerman defeated Leonardo Lavalle of Mexico, 6-4, 7-5, in the first round of a $174,000 tournament.

Also, Niklas Kroon of Sweden beat Matt Anger, 6-4, 6-4; Dan Goldie ousted Tim Wilkison, 6-2, 6-4, and Greg Holmes downed David Pate, 6-1, 6-3.
